Lucy's Engineering Adventure Book Project
The ASHRAE Nashville Chapter is heading up an effort to provide the Lucy's Engineering Adventures book to all 2nd grade classrooms and elementary school libraries in Metro Nashville Public Schools.
The Nashville Chapter of ASHRAE recognizes the need for our members to promote STEM programs to our youth and specifically those recognized in the role of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Not only will this donation provide an opportunity to invest in the youth of Metro Nashville, but this also allows us to impact our membership by engaging volunteers to deliver and read the Lucy’s Engineer Adventures in our community. These books will be delivered by a combination of our Young Engineers in ASHRAE (YEA), Women in ASHRAE (WiA), Student Activities, and Membership Promotions committees.
We know from the Metro Nashville Public Schools Open Data that there are 74 elementary schools and 28 charter schools in Metro Nashville. The following assumptions were made in our calculations:
• TN law requires classroom sizes to be limited by the following requirements: o K to 3: Maximum of 25 students, average of 20
• 6,043 2nd graders / 20 kids per classroom = 303 classrooms
• 74 elementary + 28 charter schools = 102 libraries
Our initial calculations suggest we will need 405 Lucy’s Engineering Adventure books.
• Members cost for Lucy’s Engineering Adventure = $10 per book + shipping ASHRAE Bookstore
o $4,100
o 10% Contingency = $410
TOTAL: $4,510.00
We have requested funds from ASHRAE Region VII to match dollar for dollar contributions from our local chapter members & companies, but would like to raise 100% of the funds on our own. This is an AMAZING opportunity for our members & their companies to give back to the community and introduce our industry to the next generation. Any size donation will help us reach our goal!
